So, for the past few years we've been using a makeshift dinette as our computer desk. Well, my wife is a freelance graphic designer working out of our house and needed a lot more space for our computer crap, files, etc. A desk with the space we needed would have set us back by at least a thousand bones so there was no choice. Build it or forget it.
We figured the best way to do it was to start with an old door. Found this at a salvage yard for 10 bucks. Solid as a rock - but, unfortunately, as heavy as one too! Weighs about 40-50 lbs!

Because of the weight I couldn't use regular table legs. I ended up using 4x4 fence posts which were a bitch to attach. For each leg I ended up using two brackets and one big screw right through the table top.
Next came staining the moldings and legs...
For the top we decided, rather than stripping off the old paint from the door and re-staining it, we put some cool wallpaper over the top surface and covered it with an acrylic sealer.

After the sealer was dry I cut and stained decorative side moldings and attached those the the sides of the door. Another of my wife's touches.
And here it is, in it's new habitat! We kept the old table so my daughter could use our old iMac when we were busy on the G4. The two computers are networked together.
It took about a month and half to finish but it's been worth it. Total cost was a little over $200. Not too shabby! [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

I think I am going to have to break down and do the same for me. The desk I am using is getting too old (too many moves and running out of room).
Never thought of an old door for starters.
